Jack Major, Jr.
President, Major Geothermal & Major Heating, Accredited Certified Installer
Jack Major Jr. started in the mechanical trades in 1966 working as a HVAC warehouseman and helper in the field with Jack Major (Sr.). In 1968 Jack accepted an apprenticeship with a local mechanical union, working with piping and sheet metal. By 1973 Jack earned a completion certificate from Local 208 in Denver. In 1977 Jack joined his father and founded Major Heating, which was one of the first heating contractors in Denver doing service only (no installations), later specializing in control support after attending Carrier’s controls school in California. By 1980 Major Heating added a sheet metal shop to provide new installation services for commercial buildings and custom homes.
Major Heating founded a manufacturing company in 1992, Pinnacle Refrigerant recovery units. This effort led into an extensive traveling around the United States teaching ACCA refrigerant Transition and Recovery Certification Program for Ferris State University. By 1993 Jack Jr.’s sons started working for Major Heating as apprentices; Jack C. Major now runs the service side of the business and Bob Major is running the installation of boilers and GSHP systems. In 1998 Jack sold his shares in Pinnacle to manage Major Heating full time. Growth continued, with Major Heating opening an office in Steamboat Springs in 1999, servicing the north-central and northwest portions of Colorado.
Bob Major attended an IGSHPA certification class in 2000, and encouraged Jack to consider adding geoexchange to Major Heating’s offerings. After more investigation, Jack was excited about the unlimited potential of this market, and confirmed that the GSHP industry was on the verge of significant growth. Jack decided to make geoexchange a significant part of Major Heating’s success. Major Geothermal was soon born.
Major Geothermal was founded later in 2000, as a product distributor. Jack realized from the beginning that if Major Geothermal intended to be a wholesaler, technical support would be a key part of the equation for success. Good service had to be provided with reasonable turnaround time.
Over the last few years Jack has guided Major Geothermal to exceed its expected rate of growth, due to the rapid acceptance of the technology by consumers, the practical experience and design support offered to engineers and mechanical contractors, followed with product-specific and IGSHPA training programs.
Bob Major
Robert (Bob) Major worked for Major Heating during the summers while going to high school. After graduation, Bob attended Carrier’s HVAC training school in Arizona. Bob’s interests extended to related mechanical fields, including subsequent training and certification in pipe, flat plate, and other specialized welding fields involving arc and gas systems. Further training and experience with commercial steam and hot water systems for older buildings has earned a strong reputation for Bob in the Denver mechanical community for being one of the few people with the ability to troubleshoot vintage one- and two-pipe heating systems. Due to Bob’s wide interest in various mechanical systems, he eventually became aware of ground source heat pump technology.
Bob’s interest in geoexchange progressed rapidly, and in 2000 he earned his IGSHPA installer accreditation. Bob is currently working towards becoming a certified IGSHPA certified trainer and Association of Energy Engineer/Geothermal Heat Pump Consortium’s Certified Geoexchange Designer (CGD). As part of his many duties with Major Geothermal, Bob routinely supports contractors just getting started with geoexchange by providing field supervision for specialized efforts including HDPE pipe fusion, tie-in of loops to geoexchange systems, start-up and commissioning.
